Did you know a kitchen extension is one of the most popular home improvements? The generous open-plan kitchen is at the epicentre of modern living. And the addition of extra bricks, mortar and these days usually quite a lot of glass, can have a really positive effect on the price of your home. Make your kitchen sizzle with our top tips on building a new kitchen extension.
Blurred Lines
As kitchen designers in London, we recommend that the best way to extend your kitchen is to build onto your home, of course that is dependent on the space of your plot. A kitchen extended into the garden creates the coveted blurred line between interior and exterior spaces, referred to as bringing the outside in. A kitchen space which opens on to an exterior area benefits from a continuous theme, so for example, floor coverings should be extended out onto the patio where possible and perhaps continue the run of cabinetry with an outside barbecue! Bi-folding doors are also an excellent way to make the space work seamlessly.
Insiders Tip
If you are the chief chef and bottle washer, why not position a kitchen island in the centre of your bi-folding doors…you may as well enjoy the best view in the house.
Are you adding on to a traditional property?
If your kitchen is perhaps a galley style Victorian terrace, filling in the side can offer the benefit of a large space for dining or even a living space. As a company offering contemporary kitchens through out London, we love the juxtaposition of an older property with a modern extension, however be careful that the styles are sympathetic to each other and reflect a little of the other’s characteristics.
Do you remember the challenges you faced when trying to plan a kitchen in a small space? Did you ever expect that the same challenges could be encountered when organising a large kitchen…and sometimes the bigger the kitchen, the bigger the problem. A large kitchen can present you with many options, so choosing the right one becomes tricky!
When trying to plan an oversized kitchen, think about the area as living space, not storage space. Glass doors which open to the outdoors are increasingly common, but what about internal glass partitions. Full height sliding glass partitions can create the divide between working space and playing space. Works great in rooms with high ceilings.
Play loose with the light…
When you plan your perfect kitchen extension, think about light. It is common for architects to include skylights within your extension which will instantly illuminate your new space. Your new light level allows you to choose strong colours including gun metal and black gloss. Ask our bespoke kitchen designers to advise you on a range of fabulously contrasting splash backs.
